Proponents of software defined networks tout benefits in manageability, security, ease of deployment and reconfiguration.   On paper, a number of these benefits look great.   To move from a hypothesis to delivering the potential benefits, Federal Agencies are experimenting with the architecture now.   Additionally, there may be opportunities for companies to develop supplementary tools to mature the ecosystem.   Everything from management tools, validation tools, and compliance tools will be needed to enable mass adoption.
